Matt West

Web Developer

Who's this Matt West guy, anyway?

Hi, I'm a web developer living in beautiful San Luis Obispo, Calfornia.

I like making responsive, intuitive web sites and applications. I'm the founder of CodeSLO, a group of amateur and professional developers based around the California Central Coast.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology from the Colorado State University System, but I'm primarily a self-taught developer.

Most of the projects on this site were created using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery. I've also built apps for my team at work using Node, Express, ASP.Net, C#, MongoDB and SQL. Lately I've also enjoyed working with Python with a goal of putting my code to work in software defined networking and maybe robotics

Thanks for visitng my site, I hope you enjoy it.

Projects

BlockBlaster

BlockBlaster is a simple video game that features blocks that drop from the top of the screen. The idea is to click them before they hit the bottom. Sound easy? Try getting to level 20.

Word Evolution

Word Evolution is an evolution simulator. The user inputs a short phrase and the app responds with a dozen random text strings. These strings are then run through an algorithm that determines which of them are the most similar to the user's input. The strings that are most similar are allowed to "survive" while the others are deleted.

The surviving strings are then put through an "interbreeding" algorithm, and their "children" inherit their properties. Over generations, the end result is a short phrase that is an identical match of the user input.

Gym Timer

This is a web app that functions as a boxing gym timer. Users can select their work and rest times, and the number of rounds they want to train for.

Simon

This app mimics the 80's electronic game by the same name. Featuring the original sounds!

Tic Tac Toe

This app will more than likely kick your tail at the game Tic Tac Toe, and will talk trash all the while.

The underlying game logic does not rely on specific moves, but rather on understanding the general strategy of Tic Tac Toe, and on being able to predict a winning move by observing the state of the board.

Wikipedia Viewer

This app taps the Wikipedia API in order to pull up information on just about any topic covered on that site.

Coming Soon

This application taps the YouTube API in order to show the ten most-viewed movie trailers of the year. It's a great way to find upcoming movies to get excited about!

This app was built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery. I use it as an instructional project for my coding group, CodeSLO.

JavaScript Calculator

This app replicates the functionality of a simple desktop calculator. It was built using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery.

Bouncy Ball

This is a jQuery animation I prepared as a demo for CodeSLO. Coding the physics of a bouncing ball from scratch was interesting.

Hackathon Invaders

I built this game in about ten hours as part of a small hackathon team. It ended up winning first place. Specifically, I worked on the overall sequence of the game, the movement of the player's icon and the shooting and collision code. The other members of the team were all from CodeSLO. We built this project using the JavaScript library Phaser.

Additional Projects

I have other projects on GitHub including a pair of .Net MVC apps. Please click the link above to visit my GitHub page.
